Firefighters battle blaze at commercial building in downtown L.A.
Firefighters were battling a large blaze at a commercial building in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday night.
The fire began in a pallet yard at 748 S. Ceres Ave. shortly before 7 p.m. and spread to a one-story commercial building, officials said.
That building was “a total loss,” according to fire officials, and was expected to continue burning through the night because of the contents — baled textiles — and the instability of the structure, which made it unsafe to enter.
Firefighters battled for more than two hours to save five other buildings.
Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said there were more than 140 firefighters working to keep the blaze from spreading.
No injuries have been reported.
There was no information immediately available on what sparked the blaze.
“Right now, it’s a very active fight,” Stewart said. “The cause will be much later down the road.”
The fire sent smoke billowing over downtown as much of Los Angeles was already blanketed in smoke blown down from the Sand fire burning near Santa Clarita.
