A 20-year-old man and 16-year-old girl living in a transient camp were arrested in connection with the crossbow killing of a man who died of a single arrow wound to the face, authorities said Monday night.

A second man was wounded in the attack Sunday near a highway by Arcata Bay in Eureka, according to authorities.

The suspects were taken into custody Monday afternoon without incident by a SWAT unit after they were spotted by a helicopter in a brush-covered area in the Friends of Dunes nature center in Arcata, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department said.

The department said the 44-year-old victim was found dead Sunday afternoon in a wooded area near Highway 225 and New Navy Base Road.

Department authorities described the second victim as a 41-year-old man who was shot in the hip with an arrow and also had grazing and glancing wounds to his scalp and shin.

The suspects were living in a crude encampment and allegedly attacked the two men because they had stolen items from the camp, authorities said in a statement.
