Mountain fire near Idyllwild expected to be fully contained Tuesday
Full containment is expected Tuesday of the 27,531-acre Mountain fire that threatened the Idyllwild community earlier this month.
Just a final half-mile on the northwest portion of the fire area remains to be secured, said Carol Underhill, spokeswoman for the U.S. Forest Service.
“That’s basically the last bit of work to contain the fire,” she said.
Firefighters will be working in the rugged, rocky terrain to complete the line around the perimeter, while the Burned Area Emergency Response team, along with other agencies, will continue to mop up any interior areas where the fire is still smoldering.
The team will also evaluate the land scorched by the flames in order to identify any immediate public threats from the fire, such as potential flooding and soil erosion, and determine whether any immediate action is necessary.
Authorities say the cause of the fire, which began July 15, can be attributed to “an electrical equipment failure on private property,” according to a Forest Service statement.
The investigation led by Cal Fire into the cause of the fire is ongoing, Underhill said.
Select trail and campground closures remain in effect.
