Mother arrested in shooting death of son, 17, at Rosemead hotel
A mother has been arrested on suspicion of shooting her 17-year-old son to death inside a hotel room in Rosemead, authorities said.
Lai Hang, 49, of Rosemead was arrested Monday after her son, George Hang, was found with a gunshot wound in his upper torso in the Valley Hotel, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
George Hang died at the scene.
A motive for the shooting was under investigation, sheriff’s officials said.
Authorities say they were called about 10:10 a.m. Monday to Room 11 at the hotel in the 8700 block of Valley Boulevard and recovered a handgun. The mother checked into the hotel on Sunday night.
Witnesses heard gunshots at 5 a.m., but authorities said the teen’s mother didn’t call them until after 10 a.m., KTLA reported.
Soon after the shooting, detectives detained Lai Hang for several hours and interviewed her. Initially, homicide detectives were hesitant to name her a suspect in her son’s death.
It is unclear what led detectives to arrest Lai Hang.
