Dog sniffs man’s leg, man kills dog’s owner, authorities say
A man who was angry that a dog had sniffed his leg proceeded to kill the dog’s owner in front of the victim’s teenage daughter, authorities in the Bay Area said.
Dereak Turner, 24, of Vallejo, Calif., was arrested and charged with fatally shooting the man in Hayward, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Police said Turner allegedly shot and killed 38-year-old Thomas Cunningham outside a liquor store in November 2009.
Cunningham, who was with his 13-year-old daughter and two dogs when they encountered Turner on their way home from buying ice cream. Authorities said Turner asked Cunningham to hold back his dogs. Investigators said the dogs were not leashed but were not acting aggressively, according to the Chronicle.
One of the dogs sniffed Turner’s leg, the men exchanged words, and Cunningham was shot twice with a handgun, police said. His daughter ran inside the liquor store.
