A brush fire that burned four houses in Jurupa Valley in Riverside County was contained Thursday afternoon, officials said.

The fire broke out at 8:24 a.m. on the center divider of Van Buren Boulevard and Jurupa Road and jumped across two lanes into an open field, driven by winds, said Capt. Scott Visyak with Cal Fire.

From there, it spread to nearby homes. The blaze destroyed two houses and damaged two more. It also destroyed five outlying buildiings, 10 cars and a boat.

Van Buren Elementary School was evacuated, as was a Chevron station at Van Buren and Jurupa.

No injuries were reported.

Cal Fire investigators determined the cause to be a discarded hot object, probably a cigarette.

The blaze grew to 12 acres before firefighters contained it around noon.
