Authorities search for suspect in drive-by shooting of homeless man

Sheriff’s investigators on Saturday were still searching for the gunman responsible for the fatal drive-by shooting of a homeless man in Compton the day before, authorities said.

The 29-year-old victim was identified as Alfredo Buenobaca, said Joyce Kato, an investigator with the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

Buenobaca was crossing Poinsettia Avenue, eastbound on Elm Street, shortly after 9 a.m. Friday, and was halfway across the street when a southbound vehicle approached on Poinsettia, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The right front passenger got out of the car and shot Buenobaca multiple times in the upper torso, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Department. The vehicle then continued southbound on Poinsettia, authorities said. The vehicle has been described as a “dark SUV,” said sheriff’s Sgt. Carmen Arballo.

Buenobaca was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. The motive for the shooting is unknown, and the sheriff’s investigation is continuing.
