I-5 through the Grapevine reopens after storm-related debris flow

All lanes of Interstate 5 north of Los Angeles were reopened Friday night, hours after a storm sent water, rocks and mud onto one of the state’s main arteries, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP had shut down the freeway through the Grapevine near Fort Tejon about 3 p.m. after heavy rain sent debris rushing across lanes, temporarily trapping several drivers in their vehicles, according to ABC-7.

“Boulders were just coming down the mountain and we were just like, ‘We can’t see’ and it was just really crazy,” Gabby Vasquez, one of the stranded motorists, told the station.

By Friday night, traffic was moving on I-5 in both directions, but vehicles were being escorted through the affected area by the CHP, a dispatcher said.

The rain was part of a cold, wet storm system that is expected to linger over Los Angeles County through the weekend, bringing the possibility of thunderstorms and flash flooding to mountain communities, according to the National Weather Service.
