Two sought in fatal shooting near Ventura County Fairgrounds
Police searched Thursday for two men in connection with a fatal shooting near the Ventura County Fairgrounds.
A man, who has not been identified, was shot in the head about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday on a bike path in the Ventura River bottom area near the west side of the fairgrounds, said Cmdr. Darin Schindler of the Ventura Police Department. The Ventura County Fair opened at the fairgrounds earlier Wednesday.
While he was on the bike path, the man got into a fight and “at one point during the fight, the victim was shot,” according to a police news release.
Two men “were seen running from the area, just before we got the call,” Schindler said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene
Schindler said the shooting victim had attended the fair and it was unclear if the suspects had as well. He said gang investigators were also working the case and that there was “nothing to indicate that there was a robbery or attempted robbery.”
Schindler also tried to quell any fears that the shooting occurred inside the fairgrounds.
“There’s no connection with the fair, other than he had been at the fair earlier .... It did not happen at the fair, it happened outside the fair,” Schindler said. The fair runs through Aug. 11.
