Just after midnight, two cars - one carrying five people, the other, one - collided at the intersection of North El Molino Avenue and East Maple Street, said Pasadena Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian.
Two of the five passengers in the first vehicle were killed, she said. The three others and the driver of the second car all suffered critical injuries and were rushed to the hospital.
Video from the scene showed one vehicle overturned and a second with its front end crumpled and smashed into pieces. The cause of the crash was not immediately known, according to local media outlets.
Police recommended that drivers avoid the area through the Tuesday morning’s commute.
