Two killed, several injured in crash on 405 Freeway in Van Nuys
A man and a child were killed and several others injured when a big rig collided with a sport utility vehicle on the 405 Freeway in Van Nuys, shutting down the northbound lanes for hours and snarling weekend traffic, authorities said.
The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office identified the male victim as Efrain Sifuentes Hurtado, 37 of Van Nuys. The child was identified as Luz Sifuentes, 6, also of Van Nuys.
“Our suspicion is that they are father and daughter but I don’t have any verification of that,” said Lt. R. Hays of the coroner’s office.
The accident was reported about 12:45 p.m. near the Sherman Way on-ramp, said Officer Monica Posada of the California Highway Patrol. All five northbound lanes were initially closed but reopened by 5:39 the CHP said on its Twitter account.
The other victims, including two children, were being treated for injuries at the hospital, authorities said.
The three people who were traveling in the big-rig were also transported to the hospital. All were listed in fair condition.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
