Two men were killed and three others were injured Wednesday after a Ford Mustang split in half when it struck a light pole during a traffic collision in Pasadena.

The fatal collision at about 7 a.m. involved a Ford Mustang and a mid-sized SUV at the intersection of Lake Avenue and Villa Street, said Lisa Derderian, Pasadena Fire Department spokeswoman. The collision occurred just outside a fire station, she said.

The force of the collision sent the Ford directly into the pole, wrapping the vehicle around it, Derderian said.

“It was pretty horrific, especially for our first responders,” she said.

Firefighters arrived at the crash within minutes and found a male passenger in the car dead. The male driver was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead a few hours later, Derderian said.

Two other male passengers were trapped in the backseat of the Ford and had to be extricated. They suffered serious injuries and were taken to an area hospital.

The SUV’s driver was also sent to the hospital with minor injuries, she said.

Officials have not released the identities of the victims.
