With Proposition 8’s ban on same-sex marriage lifted, Los Angeles County and some local cities are offering special procedures and extended hours Monday to meet heavy demand.

More than 500 couples have applied for marriage licenses online since Friday afternoon, according to Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean Logan.

Civil ceremonies are being performed at West Hollywood’s City Council chambers at 625 N. San Vicente Blvd. and the L.A. County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk headquarters in Norwalk.

Civil services in West Hollywood are free and on a first-come, first-served basis from 1 to 7 p.m.

The Norwalk Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk will be open until 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday to accommodate the high volume of marriage license requests.

The city of Long Beach is also offering civil marriage ceremonies Monday, but appointments must be scheduled through the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office.

Before going through a civil marriage ceremony, couples are required to obtain a marriage license. Applications are available online, but both parties in the couple must go to the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk office to pay for and pick up the license.

All seven branches of the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk will process licenses Monday. Expect wait times of about an hour, possibly longer.

To facilitate marriages, the city of West Hollywood is offering free parking at the city’s garage at 625 N. San Vicente Blvd. as well as a free shuttle service between city council chambers and the closest branch of the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk at the Beverly Hills Courthouse.

The shuttle runs from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the registrar-recorder’s office is scheduled to issue licenses from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
