El Monte man killed his daughter, friend before himself, police say
An El Monte man apparently killed his daughter and her female friend before turning the gun on himself in a double murder-suicide Tuesday night, authorities said.
Los Angeles County coroner’s officials Wednesday identified the three dead as Harry Maldonado, 65, Evie Maldonado, 32, both of El Monte; and Diana Amaya, 38. They were found shot to death Tuesday night inside a garage of a home in El Monte, according to sheriff’s and coroner’s officials.
Homicide detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department believe Harry Maldonado shot the two women before turning the gun on himself.
Investigators told reporters at a press conference outside of the home Tuesday night that one of the women appeared to be Harry Maldonado’s daughter and the other woman was a friend.
The shooting was reported Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the 9900 block of Marshall Street. El Monte police officers, who responded to the initial call, discovered the bodies. All three people were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
Since January 2007, at least 30 homicides have been reported in El Monte, according to The Times Homicide Report database.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
