Downey man drowns in ocean off La Jolla
A 22-year-old Los Angeles County man has died after being pulled unconscious from the ocean off La Jolla, officials said Sunday.
Azfar Alam of Downey, a student at UC San Diego, was found “unresponsive” in the water near La Jolla Cove on Friday night and given CPR by lifeguards before being taken to a local hospital.
He was pronounced dead Saturday afternoon, according to the San Diego County medical examiner. The cause of death is listed as drowning.
A young woman was also pulled from the water and taken by San Diego Fire & Rescue Department helicopter to the hospital. She is listed in stable condition.
The area where the two were found is known as Sunny Jim’s Cave. People on the bluff above the cave were alerted after hearing screams, according to the medical examiner.
