A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded an armed man riding a bicycle Monday night in South Los Angeles, authorities said.

Deputies were patrolling a Westmont neighborhood in the 8700 block of Budlong Avenue at about 9:40 p.m., when they tried to stop the bicyclist, the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

But the bicyclist ignored the deputies’ commands and rode away, authorities said. The bicyclist, they said, was armed with a handgun.

After riding for a short distance, the man got off his bicycle.

That’s when the deputy shot the man, striking him in the torso, according to the Sheriff’s Department. No deputies were injured.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he remained Tuesday, according to officials, who did not give his condition.

Portions of Budlong Avenue between Manchester Avenue and 90th Street were closed as officials investigated the shooting, according to Sgt. Brandon Dean.
