Two arrested in killing of Covina man awaiting OfferUp transaction
Two Covina residents have been arrested on suspicion of robbing and killing a 20-year-old man awaiting a transaction arranged through a popular marketplace app, authorities said Sunday.
Isaac Urena, 20, and a friend were in the 800 block of West San Bernardino Road on Saturday after scheduling a meetup through OfferUp, a Craigslist rival that connects sellers and buyers, Covina police Sgt. Gregg Peterson said.
The pair were in a vehicle when Urena, a Covina resident, was shot about 11:50 a.m. The friend then drove about a mile and into the parking lot of Faith Community Church in West Covina. Urena was pronounced dead at the scene. It was not clear what role he had in the OfferUp transaction.
Detectives later arrested Christopher Avila, 20, at a residence in the 1200 block of North O Malley Avenue, Peterson said. Adam Hernandez, 21, was arrested less than a half-mile away at a home in the 1400 block of North Armel Drive. A second person was arrested at the same location, but was released.
Avila and Hernandez are being held in lieu of $2-million bail each. They are scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday.
Covina police request that anyone with information contact detectives at (626) 384-5628 or (800) 222-TIPS.
