2-year-old girl dies in Malibu car crash; driver faces DUI charge
A Canoga Park woman has been arrested for allegedly driving under the influence after she crashed her vehicle on a Malibu road late Friday, killing a 2-year-old girl in the backseat and severely injuring herself, authorities said.
Magdalena Lisi, 22, was driving north on Malibu Canyon Road about a mile east of Pepperdine University around 9 p.m. when her Kia drifted off the roadway and collided with a metal guard rail, authorities said.
Lisi’s vehicle then swerved back onto the road, across double yellow lines and the southbound lane before crashing into a hillside, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The vehicle overturned, killing the toddler in the backseat, authorities said. Lisi suffered major injuries and was airlifted to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. She was later arrested on a DUI charge, though she remained at the hospital for treatment.
A supervisor with the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said the investigation of the crash was continuing and could not provide the name of the 2-year old victim as of Saturday morning.
It was not clear if the woman and child were related, but the CHP statement listed both as having resided in Canoga Park.
A Sig-Alert was issued for Malibu Canyon Road around 9:20 p.m. and canceled four hours later.
