Selfie incrimination: Thief accidentally takes picture of himself in act, police say
He’s going to steal your phone. But first, let him take a selfie.
Highlighting how technology has given criminals new ways to bungle their crimes, Los Angeles police are distributing photos and video of a man who stole an iPhone in Venice and activated its video feature, allowing the device to capture images of the poorly executed caper in progress.
Police say a man walked into a Venice home on Paloma Avenue near Speedway about 7 a.m. Saturday through an unlocked side door and swiped an iPhone. The home’s occupants slept through the incident in adjacent rooms.
Meanwhile, the thief “accidentally activated the video application, which clearly captured his image as he is standing in the victim’s living room,” the LAPD said in a news release.
Now, police are asking anyone who recognizes the man to call detectives at (310)482-6363.
