Police shoot and kill armed man in Boyle Heights, LAPD says

Los Angeles police on Tuesday shot and killed a man who was armed with a gun in Boyle Heights, the second time in one day that LAPD officers fired at a suspect, authorities said.

Officers with the Hollenbeck Division’s gang detail had come across the man near Chicago Street and Cesar Chavez Avenue about 5:50 p.m., prompting police to chase him on foot, LAPD Officer Mike Lopez said.

The chase continued eastbound on Cesar Chavez Avenue and veered south on Breed Street, where police shot the man just after 6 p.m., LAPD Det. Meghan Aguilar said.

Paramedics with the Los Angeles Fire Department pronounced the man dead at the scene, Lopez said. His identity was not released pending notification of his family.

A handgun was recovered at the scene, Aguilar said.

No officers were injured in the pursuit and shooting, which occurred in a commercial district in Boyle Heights. Investigators were canvassing the area to recover surveillance footage from businesses that may have recorded part of the incident.

Several witnesses have been identified and were cooperating with investigators.

The officers involved in the pursuit and shooting were equipped with body-worn cameras, but it is unclear if the cameras were activated, Aguilar said. Investigators have not had a chance to review the cameras.

The man was the 12^th person to be killed by on-duty LAPD officers this year, which has seen a total of 15 people shot by on-duty LAPD officers.

Early Tuesday, LAPD officers shot and wounded a man in Eagle Rock.

Officers were conducting a traffic stop near Avenue 55 and Nordyke Street about 2 a.m. when a man exited the driver’s seat, Officer Jane Kim said. Police shot him.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

A handgun believed to belong to the man was found at the scene, Kim said. It is unclear whether the man pointed a gun at the officers.

Both incidents are under investigation by the LAPD, the inspector general and the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office, which is standard practice in all LAPD uses of potentially deadly force.
