Body found floating near Newport Pier; cause of death uncertain
Lifeguards in Orange County made a grim discovery Tuesday in the ocean near Newport Pier.
Huntington Beach lifeguards encountered a body floating in the ocean near the pier in Newport Beach, Orange County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Lt. Mark Stichter said.
The lifeguards recovered the body and brought it to the Sheriff’s Department’s station in Newport Harbor, Stichter said. There, staff from the coroner’s office took custody of the body.

The identity of the body was not released. Stichter did not know if the person was male or female.
The cause of death is under investigation by the coroner’s office.
