Man’s body found under mud, debris in Angeles National Forest
A hiker in the San Gabriel Mountains made a grisly discovery on Sunday: a man’s body partly covered in mud and other debris, authorities said.
The hiker encountered the body just south of the Bridge to Nowhere, an arch bridge that stretches across the San Gabriel River, said Sgt. Vicki Gregory of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
“As soon as we found him, I had one of my other buddies come on out and call the authorities,” James Kuykendall told KCBS-TV Channel 2. “It’s a sad situation.”
The body was found in a remote location amid rugged terrain, delaying investigators. Overnight, deputies guarded the scene.
On Sunday morning, homicide detectives and investigators from the L.A. County coroner’s office were lowered to the scene from a helicopter, and the body was removed by the afternoon, Gregory said.
Officials have not yet determined the identity of the man or the cause of his death.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Department’s station in San Dimas at (909) 450-2700.
