One person was killed Monday afternoon in a car crash that possibly involved street racing near a San Bernardino elementary school.

The crash was reported about 3:15 p.m. near Waterman Avenue and 9th Street, where a gray Acura sedan had been speeding and weaving in and out of traffic, San Bernardino police Lt. Richard Lawhead said.

At some point, the driver lost control of the vehicle, sheared off a light pole and struck a water main. The car was nearly sliced in half and came to rest in the parking lot of E. Neal Roberts Elementary School, Lawhead said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not released.

Initial reports indicated the Acura was racing another vehicle. Witnesses, however, have provided conflicting statements about whether another car was involved, police said.

The possible second vehicle may have also been gray, Lawhead added.

“We’re waiting for some video surveillance from the school that captured some of the incident,” he said.

No passengers were in the Acura.
