An eclectic renovation
Film producer Lyndall Hobbs turned her Spanish-style home in the Hollywood Hills into an industrial-tinged, midcentury-flavored, thoroughly unconventional retreat. Here in the backyard, Balinese umbrellas from Koan Collection on Melrose Avenue lend color to her deck, newly expanded so guests of her frequent summer parties have more room to take in the panoramic Valley view. I wanted these black river pebbles to ring the pool but realized only later how difficult it is to keep them clean, she says. The water leaves marks on them, but you live and you learn.

Cooly elegant stairs lead from the main living area to the bedrooms. When I moved in, the space was covered in carpet, Hobbs says. We ripped everything up and, incredibly, these fabulous steel stairs were underneath. We had them polished and added cables for safety.

A light fixture in a TV nook contrasts with a midcentury clock. Eclectic is my middle name, Hobbs says. I love color and movement, and I cant abide by the rules of design. I love to mix objects and eras.

Hobbs found a stainless steel fabricator on San Fernando Road to make her island. The cabinets are from Ikea. She made the unlikely choice of placing her washer and dryer in plain view. I thought about putting them in the garage, she says, adding that a $10,000 estimate from a plumber made her realize she didnt care if they were in the kitchen. After putting the concrete floors down, I realized the space needed warmth, she says, so up went the maple paneling in back. Im not deliriously happy with the booth, but we can get six people stuffed around it.

The new breakfast nook is where Hobbs sits and watches the morning news. I dont know why, but I always have wanted a red ceiling, she says.

“I found this rigidized metal sheeting on the Internet and tried to order it for the bathroom, Hobbs says. The company at first refused, saying that it only dealt with commercial entities. After some convincing, they sent strips, and I had my crew put the metal directly on the walls. The result reflects the houses owner: quirky, with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor.
