L.A. teachers’ strike gets support from celebrities and educators around the world

Union organizers, former teachers and labor rights organizations from across America and around the world have rallied to back Los Angeles teachers as they went on strike on a rainy Monday.

On Twitter, local organizations including the Los Angeles Tenants Union and the California Teachers Assn. announced their support using the hashtags #strike4ed and #redfored.

So did celebrities such as “Jane the Virgin” actor Jaime Camil, who announced support for the strike from the Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

East Coast education organizations including the Maryland State Education Assn., Bridgewater State University’s branch of the Massachusetts State College Assn., AFT Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers also encouraged L.A. teachers.

“We stand with our sisters and brothers from @UTLAnow as they fight for their students and schools,” the Maryland State Education Assn. tweeted.

Educators with the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers posted a video of its members donning red T-shirts and chanting: “PFT solidarity with L.A.”

Across the Atlantic, members of the National Education Union, which represents educators in Britain, rallied for the L.A. teachers. Over the weekend, a group of young teachers got together to pose for a photograph with their fists up and signs that read “Solidarity to the Teachers of Los Angeles.”
