Weinstein hosting Obama fundraiser featuring Hathaway, Sorkin

WASHINGTON – As his campaign gets outdone again on the fundraising front, President Obama is returning to one of his most reliable sources for cash: Hollywood types.

It’ll be familiar faces, different backdrop for Monday night’s fundraising trip to a tony town in Connecticut. Producer Harvey Weinstein is hosting Obama at his Westport home. Actress Anne Hathaway and screenwriter and producer Aaron Sorkin are also listed as co-hosts for the $35,800-a-ticket soiree. Paul Newman’s widow, Joanne Woodward, is also expected to attend, along with about 60 others.

The Weinstein beachfront compound promises a top-dollar setting for the dinner. The Hartford Courant reports that the property, a combination to two estates, is worth $15.5 million. The main house is a two-story, 8,900-square-foot, seven-bathroom Colonial built in 1909. The estate includes two other small homes, the paper says. Two neighboring beaches will be closed for the occasion, spurring some complaining from a local Republican.

Before the Weinstein fundraiser, Obama is slated to stop in at the Stamford Marriott for a larger $500-a-head event. About 400 people are expected. Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy will attend both events, according to a campaign official.

Obama’s money hunt has been far reaching, including several trips to hit up movie people in their natural habitat: Los Angeles. But the president’s haul has lagged behind his rival Republican Mitt Romney. Obama’s campaign announced Monday that it pulled in more than $75 million in July, compared with Romney’s $101.3 million.
