10 groundbreaking women we lost in 2013

The “Iron Lady,” Dear Abby, Edith Bunker, a sex researcher, a Wall Street pioneer, the oldest Nobel laureate in literature and a Disney daughter. These were among the famous -- and not-so-famous -- women who died in 2013.

It may be instructive to remember that these 10 women, who were all ahead of their time in their fields or pursuits, shared more than a few key traits: determination, commitment, perseverance.

It took years -- even decades -- and the unswerving support of a few good men and women by their side, but ultimately, these strong-willed (sometimes quietly, often not) women broke down barriers, doggedly pushed ahead, prospered and, of course, paved the way for the young women and men who followed. Sometimes it only takes one person to make a real difference.
