On Trend: Timeless kilim rugs provide a pop of color amid all the minimalism
Age has its advantages, and right now one of the hottest trends in home decor is truly ancient.
Kilim rugs, the colorful Middle Eastern carpets designed with bold, graphic patterns and a distinctive, nonpile flat weave, have existed for thousands of years and are once again having a moment.
“I think what we see in home decor overall is people moving toward minimalism and Scandinavian design,” said Larkin Brown, user researcher and in-house stylist at Pinterest, the social media and bookmarking site. “But then, there is less visual interest on the walls and furniture so people look for ways to make it pop with color and texture in their accessories.”
According to Pinterest’s analysis that monitors more than 3 billion “pins” in the home decor category alone, the number of saved images showing kilim rugs and accessories has doubled since last year.
“It’s a great way to spot trends,” said Brown, “because people on Pinterest are planners, and they are saving ideas for the future.”
In addition to craving the classic, bohemian rugs, style seekers are interpreting the global-inspired kilim trend via upholstered furnishings, wall hangings, personal and home accessories and even such items as posters and stationery.
