Hollywood Hills home of Jim Turner, co-founder of Flaunt and Detour magazines
Turner eyes an antler chandelier in the foyer, which features an eclectic mix of artwork: vintage cowboy paintings, black-and-white photos and contemporary pieces. The large Terry Rodgers painting of a Hollywood party, shown next to the window, served as artwork for Flaunt magazines August 2003 cover. Turner and Barajas are cofounders of the monthly fashion and culture magazine. (Irfan Khan / Los Angeles Times)

I love pieces that have a story to tell or could spark a story in someone else, Turner says. Almost everything I buy is a conversation starter. Some of those pieces are featured in the living room, including a deer head sconce, a cement garden deer and an array of vintage Monterey-style furnishings once produced by Mason Manufacturing for Barker Bros., a downtown Los Angeles furnishings store from the mid-1900s.
