Former Golden Road brewmaster joins Angel City parent

Jon Carpenter, until recently the brewmaster at Golden Road Brewing, is joining the team relaunching Angel City Brewing as brewmaster for the “craft beer incubator” Alchemy & Science. The San Diego native will be responsible for all production of beer, from recipe development to quality control, for the Vermont-based parent company of Angel City Brewing.

Previous to his stint as Golden Road Brewing’s first brewmaster, Carpenter had served as assistant brewer for Dogfish Head Brewing in Delaware and as a brewer at Anheuser Busch -- first at an R&D; brewery and then managing a production brewery. At Golden Road Brewing he oversaw the construction of the regional production brewery over 2012 before announcing his departure last month.

President and co-founder of Golden Road, Meg Gill, said of Carpenter’s new position: “We are happy for Jon and wish him the best of luck! We are big fans of Angel City Brewing and, as always, are excited to see local craft beer continue to gain momentum.”

Angel City Brewery, which has just opened the doors on its spacious Arts District facility, is the first project for parent company Alchemy & Science. A&S; was created in late 2011 when Boston Beer’s Jim Koch charged Alan Newman and Stacey Steinmetz, veterans of America’s ninth-largest craft brewery, with “finding, creating and managing craft beer opportunities” with the goal of growing the craft beer industry. The independently operating subsidiary of the Boston Beer Co. has the freedom to pursue the most intriguing and exciting opportunities, backed by Boston Beer’s deep pockets.

As brewmaster for Alchemy and Science, Carpenter will be responsible for all the beers -- and “other liquids” -- being produced across all the company’s projects (which currently include House of Shandy and newly acquired Just Beer) and for providing a unified vision for all of the Alchemy & Science projects.

Carpenter says he’s excited to work with so many creative people across the industry, and his first focus will be on continuing to refine Angel City Brewing’s beers and growing the brewery’s presence in Los Angeles.

In contrast to the accelerated growth of Golden Road Brewing’s distribution network, Carpenter says Angel City is focused on remaining “hyper-local” and building a strong following in its downtown neighborhood.

He hopes the brewery’s tap room can grow into a prominent space for the growing craft beer community in Los Angeles. Prior to Angel City Brewery’s grand opening event this spring you can grab a pint, fill a growler, or tour the brewery during the tap room’s limited hours.
