LACMA hosts Foodprint project on Sunday

The Foodprint project brings its series of international conversations about food and the city to Los Angeles on Sunday. LACMA will be hosting the event in its Brown Auditorium where a large and multi-disciplinary panel of experts and advocates will gather to discuss L.A.’s food systems.

Researchers, journalists, politicians, biologists and artists, among others, will chime in on food from production to consumption while addressing environmental, ethical and economic concerns. Speakers scheduled for Sunday include L.A. Times food critic Jonathan Gold; Paula Daniels, the founder of the Los Angeles Food Policy Council; Allison Carruth, assistant professor of English at UCLA; and Teague Weybright, board president of the L.A. Community Garden Council.

Panelists will explore the future of feeding Los Angeles over the course of the afternoon program while covering four main topics of discussion on the agenda: “zoning diet,” which asks how zoning, policy and economics shape L.A.’s food systems; “culinary cartography,” asking what Angelenos can learn when we map L.A. using food as the metric; “edible archaeology,” looking at today’s food culture and how it has been shaped by social changes, economic fluctuations and technological innovations; and “feast, famine and other scenarios,” looking at what opportunities and challenges lie ahead for the city’s food future.

In addition to the panel discussion at LACMA, Foodprint has scheduled two events happening on Saturday – a walking tour mapping the foodscape of downtown L.A., which is now sold out, followed by a gathering at Villains Tavern from 5 to 7 p.m. where food maps will be reviewed and discussed. The get-together at Villains is open to all interested in food, urban design and the development of downtown L.A.’s Arts District.
