Super Bowl party time: Tacos, a pig roast, beer pong, Suzanne Goin’s chicken wings

If you’re not entirely sure what you’re doing on the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 1, you probably need to start watching ESPN. It’s the Super Bowl, and even if you’re not a fan of either the Seattle Seahawks or the New England Patriots, you may like the commercials or, who knows, even Katy Perry, who’s doing the half-time show this year. But if you’re a football fan at all, it’s going to be a fantastic game. With or without Marshawn Lynch’s golden shoes.

Even if you know who you’re rooting for, you may still need help with the menu. Do you stay home and get back into holiday cooking mode — or do you go out and watch the game at a place where the bartenders will get your beer for you? Happily there are restaurants and bars around town to help you, in either case. Get Suzanne Goin to make your chicken wings for you, Roy Choi to organize a beer pong tournament and make you Korean pub food, or guzzle mezcal while you eat tacos and oyster and bacon omelets at Petty Cash. Oh, and then there’s that pig roast.

Bludso’s Bar-&-Que — If you don’t normally watch games at Kevin Bludso’s La Brea Avenue outpost, you can always start big. There are many, many televisions, some great craft beer, and of course all that barbecue. And since the Cowboys aren’t in it (Bludso is a big Cowboys fan), then there’s no partisanship to worry about. But there are specials. The folks there are actually bringing over the fryer from Prime Pizza (Jason Bernstein, Zak Fishman and James Starr are behind both restaurants) so that they can make the Buffalo wings (six for $6) they’ll be introducing at Prime a few days later. Dog Haus Biergarten — The Pasadena hot dog and beer house will have the game on seven flatscreen TVs, including five inside and two on the patio. While you’re watching, you can nosh on $1 burger sliders, and plenty of drink specials. The Fat Dog — If you’re in Hollywood, the Fat Dog will be bringing in an extra TV so that you can watch the game on their dog-friendly patio in front. (Because hopefully not everybody’s dog freaks out when you scream at touchdowns). Offerings include dips, snacks and starters such as spicy chicken wings with blue cheese dressing, barbecued brisket sliders, meat and cheese plates, AOC dates, and house-made onion dip with sweet potato chips. Now Boarding — The new West Hollywood cocktail lounge will open at 1 p.m. and offer drink specials, including $5 beers, $6 well drinks, $9 specialty cocktails that are based on the Patriots and the Seahawks and the Lombardi Martini (which comes with a shot of Champagne). The Lobos food truck will be parked out back, and there will be post-game entertainment from Funktion, a four-piece funk band. Oh, and the televisions? Apparently they’re giant 65-inch TVs that the place usually keeps hidden behind artwork. Petty Cash — On Super Bowl Sunday you can watch the game while you eat upscale tacos, pig’s ear nachos and have a bar filled with lots mezcal at your disposal. POT Lobby Bar — Roy Choi may be a hard-core Dodgers fan, but that doesn’t mean that he can’t help you out for your football needs too. The POT Lobby Bar in the Line Hotel in Koreatown will have $15 pitchers of beer, $9 POT shots and beer specials, pub food and you can eat and drink all this while you watch the game on their big screen. The food (POT the restaurant will be closed) will include Korean fried chicken wings, fried dumplings, rice cake nachos and vegetable pancakes. This means executive chef Tim Guiltinan’s Three Pieces of Chicken (brined for 48 hours, battered six times, served with Thai dipping sauce), and special Tiki cocktails, for $20 per person. Tanzy — For those on the Westside, Tanzy in Westwood is offering bottomless brunch and all-day social hour specials while the game is shown on the bar television. Venice Whaler — If you’re anywhere near Venice, the Venice Whaler is roasting a whole pig on the patio. Thus your dining options include the Pig Platter, which includes roast pork with chimichurri, cannellini beans, corn bread and coleslaw. Also available are chili nachos, Tailgate Hootch, buckets of beer, and $5 shots of whiskey with pickle juice chasers.
