$1 drinks and more booze to celebrate Repeal Day
Thursday is Repeal Day, a time to celebrate the end of Prohibition. For those who need a little reminder: On Dec. 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment repealed the 18th Amendment, which prohibited the manufacture, sale and transportation of alcoholic beverages. Eighty years later, we’re still celebrating Prohibition’s end. Here are some venues around town getting in on the fun. Cheers!
Cole’s Red Car Bar is hosting the 5th Jimmy Barella Bartending Competition on Thursday with live jazz music and three rounds of competition. The judging starts at 3 p.m. There will also be an ice luge and $5 Old Overhault punch. Guests are encouraged to dress in their best ‘30s attire. 118 6th St., Los Angeles, 213nightlife.com/colesfrenchdip.
Comme Ca is celebrating Repeal Day with drink specials now through Wednesday. Guests who come in to the bar and say a secret password will receive a special cocktail for $6. Passwords will be revealed each day on the restaurant’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. On Thursday Comme Ca will offer $6 classic cocktails featuring gin and rye. Cocktails include Gin Rickey, Sazerac, Manhattan and Negroni. 8479 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood, (323) 782-1104, www.commecarestaurant.com.
The Del Monte Speakeasy, downstairs at the Townhouse, is celebrating with music from the Brad Kay Regressive Jazz Quartet, beginning at 7 p.m. and a special talk on all things Repeal Day and Prohibition by author Richard Foss. Tickets are $25 and include a Repeal Day Era punch, three cocktails that correspond to Foss’ talk, a roast pig and Prohibition sides. The private event will take place from 7 to 9 p.m., then open to the public. The Townhouse will serve Repeal Day punch for $5 and Repeal Day cocktails for $9 all night long. From 10 p.m. to 11 p.m., Townhouse and the Del Monte Speakeasy will serve a selection of cocktails for $1. Menotti’s Coffee Stop, located next to the Townhouse, will also offer Prohibition pricing from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with $1 coffee. 52 Windward Avenue, Venice, (310) 392-4040, https://townhousevenice.com/.
