Plan Check to open on Fairfax with pastrami salmon and, of course, burgers
Westside burger haven Plan Check is set to open its second location (on Fairfax Avenue just south of Canter’s) on Friday, in a twice-the-size-of-the-original space and with chef Ernesto Uchimura’s menu and cocktail consultant Matthew Biancaniello’s drinks.
The menu mimics its Sawtelle predecessor with Uchimura’s ketchup- and Sriracha-leather laden burgers, fries cooked in beef tallow, a variety of pickles, jidori fried chicken, pastrami fries and, of course, the sugar-crusted crullers.
In addition to the chef’s daily specials, there is one new item on the menu: pastrami salmon. It’s a fillet of spice-crusted salmon, served with an everything bagel chip, pickled celery and squid ink cream cheese.
Among Biancaniello’s roster of drinks is the Fish Out of Water, bonito-infused Famous Grouse scotch with agave syrup, lemon and shiso. “Ernesto always has bonito around for his dashi,” said Biancaniello, “and so I infused it into scotch.” Of course.
The Cascading Hophead is made with Hophead vodka, agave syrup, lemon, grapefruit, Sculpin IPA, yellow Chartreuse and rosemary. Splendor in the Grass is aloe liqueur, agave syrup, lime juice, arugula and white truffle salt.
Owner Terry Heller tapped San Diego-based design firm Basile Studio to transform the space into a dimly lit, wood-filled dining room and bar. There are large front windows that open up onto the sidewalk below, a seating area of high table tops and angular booths, and a two-sided bar.
Plan Check will be open for lunch and dinner Sunday to Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12 a.m., Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. and Friday to Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m.
There will be a hip-hop happy hour daily from 3 p.m . to 7 p.m., featuring select craft beers and cocktails and a Late-Night Bite menu served during the last two hours of service.
