KitKat in, Key Lime Pie out: Google’s new operating system gets candy bar name

Google has revealed the name of its new Android 4.4 operating system, and it’s called KitKat. Yes, the tech giant has decided to code-name it’s new system after the iconic candy bar, reported BBC News.

Apparently Google’s employees have quite the sweet tooth. It’s tradition for the company to name its Android operating systems after sweet treats. Previous Android versions have included Cupcake, Eclair, Donut, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Jelly Bean and Ice Cream Sandwich.

“As everybody finds it difficult to stay away from chocolate we decided to name the next version of Android after one of our favorite chocolate treats, KitKat!” read a statement on the Android website.

The system was originally supposed to be called Key Lime Pie and was referred to as Key Lime Pie internally to keep the real name a secret. The KitKat system is the result of a partnership between Google and Nestle, the brand behind the chocolate-covered wafers.

Some employees of Google didn’t know the name of the new system until they saw an Android statue made of Kit Kats standing on the company’s Mountain View, Calif., campus.

To promote the KitKat operating system, Nestle has manufactured more than 50 million chocolate bars with the Android mascot on the package in the US, Brazil, the UK, India, Japan and Russia. The BBC reports that the branding deal between Google and Nestle was not for cash.
