Three-year-old Eagle Rock Brewery took home the coveted Best in Show award at the San Diego International Beer Competition. Equinox, their light and tart American wild ale, took top honors at last weekend’s competition, and the Eagle Rock team is celebrating.

More than 180 breweries from around the world entered more than 900 distinct beers into the competition -- the largest of its kind on the West Coast. Eagle Rock Brewery also won a gold medal in the Belgian-Style Pale Ale category with the newest addition to their year-round line-up: Unionist.

Equinox -- a blond ale that is aged in various wine barrels to develop its tartness and subtle funk -- garnered a gold medal in the Other Sour Ale category, besting local favorites from San Diego’s Lost Abbey Brewing, before it was crowned best in show.

Unfortunately, the beer is only released twice a year -- around each equinox. The brewery just sold out of bottles from the spring batch, but hopefully the next batch will be ready in time for the autumnal equinox in September.

Brewery cofounder Ting Su said she and brewmaster Jeremy Raub were shocked speechless when they were announced as the overall winners. “Now that it’s had some time to sink in, we’re incredibly honored by the award considering all the outstanding beers entered in the competition.”

The team started its victory tour by bringing the trophy to a company event at Monday night’s Dodger game. Su said, “It’s awesome to have Los Angeles represented in such a well-respected beer competition, and we’re so excited to be able to bring that amazing trophy to L.A. and show it the sites. We’ve already started by taking it to Dodger Stadium with us!”
