Cocktail Crafting: Looking to create cocktails like your local mixologist? The Institute of Domestic Technology has recently added another date for its class on bitters, liqueurs and cocktail basics (the class on June 7 is sold out). The workshop on July 19, to be held at the Greystone Mansion Speakeasy, will cover the history of making bitters, common and not-so-common ingredients and will include cocktail recipe testing and making liqueur infusions to take home. Registration costs $95 per person. www.instituteofdomestictechnology.com.

History of bread: On June 8, the Culinary Historians of Southern California will present a talk by William Rubel called “Song of Wheat: The History of Bread, Grains and Leavenings from Prehistory to Today.” Rubel will address the general history of bread and why we eat the breads we do today, with a focus on choice of flour, size and shape, crust and crumb, types of leavening and, of course, flavor. The event at the Los Angeles Public Library starts at 10:30 a.m. and is free and open to the public. www.chscsite.org.

Shutters birthday bash: Shutters on the Beach celebrates its 20th birthday June 8 with an all-inclusive evening featuring a cocktail reception, wine pourings from Far Niente and a special dinner featuring chefs past and present. Chef Sven Meade will join former Shutters chefs Jeff Jackson and Beau MacMillian in the One Pico kitchen to prepare a menu featuring a heirloom tomato and watermelon salad with chilled crab and piperade sorbet; roasted Chilean sea bass with black bean sauce; braised beef short ribs with farmers market vegetables and a red wine reduction; and for dessert, a warm chocolate pudding cake. The all-inclusive affair is $220 per person. Email [email protected] for reservations. 1 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica, (310) 458-0300, www.shuttersonthebeach.com.
