L.A., where are your tipping manners? Data from smartphone device shows only 55% tip
Think you’re a good tipper? Chances are, if you live in L.A., you’re leaving less than 20% based on data from Square, the company that makes those little square mobile pay devices some business owners attach to their smartphones.
The devices, used in some restaurants and by other independent service providers such as hairdressers, show people in Los Angeles leave an average of 15.6%. And only 55% of us leave a tip at all.
The San Francisco-based company looked at the percentage of customers who tip and the average tip size in 10 U.S. cities. According to their data, people in Denver are the most generous tippers in the country with 62% of customers leaving a tip of 16.8%.
Chicago had the highest percentage of customers tipping with 63% and an average tip of 16.7%.
Atlanta and Tampa tied for the least number of people tipping with 51% and customers in San Francisco were found to tip the least amount with an average tip of 15.5%.
