Vogue, MAC Cosmetics throw star-studded fete for Prabal Gurung
Although the event that MAC Cosmetics and Vogue magazine organized for Prabal Gurung at the Chateau Marmont on Monday night was billed as an “intimate cocktail party and dinner,” it felt more like a patio-overflowing Hollywood awards show/CFDA master class mash-up.
Spotted among the attendees were several “Star Trek Into Darkness” cast members beamed down ahead of Tuesday’s premiere -- Zachary Quinto, Alice Eve and Zoe Saldana -- with Uhura taking the place of honor to Gurung’s right at dinner.
Others spotted at the long, candle-covered tables included Ginnifer Goodwin, Hailee Steinfeld, Diane Kruger, Emma Roberts, Dita Von Teese, Liz Goldwyn, China Chow, Gelila Puck, Morena Baccarin, Rachel Zoe and husband Rodger Berman, and costume designer Arianne Phillips.
They were joined by some serious West Coast fashion design power, including George Esquivel, Kendall Conrad and the Elder Statesman’s Greg Chait, this year’s winner of the Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund Award.
Back on home turf after a trip to New York for the punk-themed Met Costume Gala (“I didn’t find it too hot at all,” Chait said with a mischievous grin. “I was totally comfortable”), he told us he’s about to travel to Central America. “I’m headed to Guatemala,” he said. “They’ve got some fabric I want to get my hands on.” We can’t wait to see the knitwear yumminess that ensues.
Those responsible for the fashion-fame convergence were the evening’s hosts Estee Lauder Group President John Demsey and Vogue magazine Senior West Coast Editor Lisa Love.
“It was the easiest invitation ever,” said Demsey. “When you send something out to celebrate Prabal Gurung, the world comes.” MAC’s support of Gurung has included sponsorship dollars and creating runway show makeup looks, going all the way back to his first show in 2009. Demsey met Gurung through Carolina Herrera, “who is a great mentor to young designers,” he said.
Gurung was on cloud nine during his visit to L.A., which included celebrating jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer at a swish Rodarte-hosted cocktail party at producer Joel Silver’s estate in Brentwood, and dancing the night way with Olivier Theyskens and Haider Ackermann at Bryan Rabin’s new weekly party Giorgio’s Discotheque at the Standard Hotel.
“It feels like my wedding,” Gurung said taking the pre-dinner microphone in front of the crowd seated in the garden dining area. “Perhaps the only one I’ll ever have.”
“When Anna [Wintour] says you should have a dinner in L.A., you just say, ‘Thank you very much.’” He went on to thank Lisa Love, adding, “Every time I hold a microphone, I feel like singing. And dancing. I know it’s a school night, but there will be dancing.”
The evening began with a performance by Ginny Blackmore and ended, just as Gurung said it would, with dancing. Even the “Star Trek” kids stuck around.
