Paris Fashion Week 2013: Dries Van Noten goes grunge
PARIS -- A grunge romance. That’s how you might describe Belgian designer Dries Van Noten’s spring-summer 2013 collection shown Wednesday at a Left Bank garage space during Paris Fashion Week.
The look: Masculine and feminine. Sheer plaids and soft florals. Menswear inspiration mixed with boudoir-inspired sheer layers and ruffles. Navy, black, lavender, pink and blue color palette.
The key piece -- a sheer, plaid button-down shirt (Noten’s softer take on the grunge flannel) -- was paired with everything from a silvery plaid vest and blue floral pencil skirt to a slouchy camel-colored grandpa sweater and sheer floral pajama pants.
Skirts came with a sheer overlay and a cascading back ruffle, or sparkly embroidered front panels. Sleeveless jackets were defined by nipped-in waists and ruffled peplums.
The scene: Fellow Belgian designer Walter van Beirendonck was there lending his support, and top editors came dressed in the latest from Van Noten’s fall collection, no doubt freshly purchased from his Left Bank boutique, which is a must-shop on the fashion circuit.
The verdict: Intelligent and wearable. Gorgeous print and color story. A unique spin on the grunge theme, and at the same time, a casual (read: not overly precious) take on ruffled femininity.
