Freddy Smalls’ Summertime Backyard BBQ takes place Aug. 18. in the West L.A. gastropub’s back parking lot. It’s $45 for an all-you-can-eat menu of beer-steamed Maryland blue crab, smoked Mary’s chickens, grilled tri-tip with Texas toast and chimichurri, roasted pork shoulder tacos, grilled corn on the cob with barbecue spiced butter, mixed melon and frying pepper salad, tomato panzanella, potato salad, olive oil cake with roasted Seascape strawberries and lavender cream and peach and blueberry crisp with ice cream. Son of a Gun hosts a Low Country Boil & Cocktail Smash with the drinks magazine Imbibe on Aug. 10. Bartender Daniel Warrilow has helped prepare cocktail pairings to go with oysters on the half shell; iceberg wedge salad with creamy Italian dressing, Yukon Gold potato salad, peel-and-eat shrimp, mussels, clams, kielbasa, corn on the cob and Red Bliss potatoes, lobster roll, cheddar Old Bay biscuit, and peach and berry cobbler. De Porres Dinner Series, founded in February 2012 by Pablo Osorio and Danielle Bell in their Bedford-Stuyvesant home, comes to the downtown arts space 356 Mission on Aug. 15. The dinner series marries dishes from Osorio’s native Peru and Bell’s American South desserts. Tarot card readings by Marty Windahl and cocktails such as strawberry lemonade spiked with rum and the non-alcoholic chica morada kick off the evening, which features a six-course Peru-inspired menu. Melon and toasted quinoa wrapped in sweet potato leaves; tomatoes and zucchini blossoms stuffed with brebis blanche and huacatay (Peruvian black mint); a Limeño dish of octopus braised in aromatics, botija olive aioli and Valencia oranges; pork shoulder marinated in citrus and aji amarillo; vanilla bean pound cake, California boysenberries, whipped crea, and Tokaji.
