Like pie? Find out how much at KCRW’s Good Food Pie Contest
Tough question time: Just how much do you like pie? If you like it a lot -- we’re talking a lot, like upper fractional percentiles -- you almost certainly already have a date to be at KCRW-FM’s fourth annual Good Food Pie Contest, presided over by the pie queen herself, Evan Kleiman. The rest of you still have time to make your plans.
The contest will be held Saturday at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, starting at 2 p.m. Finalists will be announced at 3:30 p.m., and after a little stage business, the winners will be called forth at 3:45 p.m.
Be sure to get there early enough so you can head to the welcome table just north of the Ahmanson Building to collect a pie ticket, which will allow you to sample the entries. Judging by past years, these will go very quickly. But if you’re late, fear not: Patina will be selling food and beverages during the contest, and it’s a sure bet some of it will come with a crust.
Pies can fall into five categories: fruit, nut, cream/chiffon/mousse, savory and Metropolis II Inspired (based on artist Chris Burden’s installation at LACMA; last year’s wild card was based on Tim Burton’s work and the less said the better).
Judges for the event include pastry chefs Roxana Jullapat (Cook’s County), Karen Hatfield (Hatfield’s, Sycamore Kitchen), Shannon Swindle (Craft), Sherry Yard (Spago), Zoe Nathan (Huckleberry) and Josh Graves (Ray’s and Stark Bar), as well as savory chefs David Lefevre (MB Post), Michael Voltaggio (Ink), Ilan Hall (Gorbals) and Kris Morningstar (Ray’s and Stark Bar). Outside of any category, there’ll also be Huell Howser.
