Documentary ‘Somm,’ about sommeliers, a must-see for wine enthusiasts
Attention, aspiring sommeliers, “Somm,” the documentary about four contenders studying like crazy for the master sommelier exam, debuts for a one-week run at Sundance Sunset Cinemas in West Hollywood. Until now, Jason Wise’s 1 1/2-hour documentary has been shown mostly at wine and film festivals.
Grab a ticket for Friday or Saturday and you can attend a free pop-up Beringer tasting. Even better, both the 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. showings will feature a question-and-answer period with director Jason Wise and Master Sommelier Brian McClintic.
Jason Wise will answer questions at the matinee showing on Sunday too.
Check Friday’s paper for film critic Kenneth Turan’s review of the film: “Note to self after watching ‘Somm’: That nice person who helps you decide what wine to choose at an upscale restaurant just might be a little bit crazy.”
“That is one of the messages of this glib but ultimately engaging documentary about the folks who not only become sommeliers but also expend the extraordinary effort necessary to become master sommeliers by passing an exam so rigorous it makes grown men weep,” writes Turan.
Sounds like a must-see for anybody interested in wine or restaurants.
