New York Fashion Week spring-summer 2013: Joseph Abboud
Reporting from New York — The collection: Bernardo Rojo for the Joseph Abboud spring-summer 2013 collection.
The inspiration: “Doers, dreamers and disobeyers – the men who take matters into their own hands,” including James Dean in “Rebel Without a Cause” and Ryan Gosling in “Drive.”
The look: Alternately crisp and crumpled, the watchword throughout Thursday’s night show was effortless – whether it was unconstructed linen suits with fabric belts that knotted off center like slightly askew bow ties, denim blazers that looked like safari jackets, body-hugging cargo shorts, Neoprene motorcycle jackets or patent leather raincoats, in a color palette dominated by a range of blues, butter yellows and bright reds.
The scene: Accompanied by live music , including at least a half-dozen violinists and a soaring techno keyboard, two huge video screens and a celebrity-packed front row that included Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte and “Twilight” actor Kellan Lutz, the runway show, the first of several this week scheduled to take place in the New York Public Library, was a class act that perfectly complemented Bernardo Rojo’s latest collection for the Joseph Abboud label.
The verdict: In his show notes, creative director Bernardo Rojo didn’t just name-check Hollywood’s big-screen rule-breakers, he also gave a shout-out to the world capital of rule-breaking, calling the combination of “grit and glamour … an unmistakable homage to L.A.”
And in a way he’s right -- while not every man is going to be able to pull off a royal blue Neoprene motorcycle jacket, a red, patent leather car coat or a Western-style shirt with navy blue and white stripes so wide they could get you mistaken for a sports referee, chances are the average Angeleno knows at least five.
