Oscars 2019: Gemma Chan’s pockets steal the show on the red carpet

Gemma Chan made quite an impression at her very first Academy Awards.

The fuchsia taffeta gown by Valentino with expanding frills that resembled an upside down tulip would have overwhelmed other actresses. For Chan, an Oxford-educated former model who works with stylist Rebecca Corbin-Murray, the shape draped well from her height.

Clustered gemstones on her Bulgari earrings contrasted with her slightly messy up-’do. Although her Jimmy Choo clutch matched her dress, what really gave the gown from Valentino’s spring/summer 2019 haute couture collection an easy-to-wear aspect was the pair of hidden pockets.

Chan, who appeared in “Crazy Rich Asians” and is heading to the silver screen next in “Captain Marvel,” was such a red-carpet vision that model Ashley Graham snapped a selfie with her on the carpet.
