Met Gala’s best dressed: Tattooed supermodel outdoes Rihanna, Beyonce
Forget the headline grabbing, look-at-me, side butt-revealing sheer gowns (Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian) and Rihanna’s showstopping canary yellow cape that spawned a thousand Internet memes (it’s an omelet! It’s a pizza!).
Some of the most notable style statements at Monday night’s Met Gala were more subtle, some nodding to the “China: Through The Looking Glass” theme, some not. Among them, Kerry Washington’s sweet pink silk faille Prada gown with bows on the shoulders, Grace Coddington’s chic silk pajamas and Amal Clooney’s Margiela “Artisinal” dress, designed by John Galliano, of hand painted red silk organza with tile-like embroidered bodice.
I also liked a lot of the beauty statements — Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s muted nude lip stain to match their darkly romantic vintage John Galliano for Dior gowns. (The shade is NYX Cosmetics Liquid Suede Lipstick in Soft Spoken, according to Allure magazine, and it launches in June for $7.) And I liked Dakota Johnson’s winged eyeliner, Claire Danes’ dark cherry pout and Katie Holmes’ new bob haircut.
But supermodel Cara Delevingne outdid them all, making body art part of her edgy Stella McCartney look.
The Chinese-inspired blossoms and birds that snaked up her arms and around her neck are the work of celebrity tattoo artist Keith “Bang Bang” McCurdy. McCurdy has tattooed Delevingne more than a dozen times, according to a news release, including inking a lion’s head on her index finger and the word “bacon” on the bottom of her foot. (Not sure what that’s about.)
In a decade, McCurdy has gone from tattooing bikers on the outskirts of a Delaware trailer park to celebrities including Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, Rita Ora and Adele, according to his bio. He has a tradition of letting celebrities ink him back, too – a cartoon mouse from Justin Bieber, a peppermint from Katy Perry, an umbrella from Rihanna and a crescent moon from Miley Cyrus.
In late 2014, Bang Bang opened his flagship store in New York City’s Lower East Side, and looking forward, Harper Collins is publishing McCurdy’s first book, “Bang Bang: My Life In Ink.”
There you have it.
