At Tadashi Shoji, less body-conscious design and more romance
Los Angeles-based designer Tadashi Shoji went in a bold, new direction with his fall 2014 collection, which was less about his popular sexy body-conscious shapes and more about romantic surface details.
He showed his collection during New York Fashion Week on Thursday at Lincoln Center.
The inspiration: Moorish palaces, luxuriant textiles and ornate architectural details.
The look: Romantic and sophisticated. Covered up, because covering up the arms is something many women look for in a dress, he said backstage.
Key pieces: Navy blue and nude, laser-cut, tile-patterned long sleeve mini dress. Paisley print tulle sleeveless dress with hand beaded scroll-like detail on bodice. Navy and nude metallic Chantilly lace dress with tie neck and long sleeves. Ivory lace ruffled front blouse and black velvet floor length skirt. Black illusion gown embellished with diamantes. Blue velvet cocktail dress with roughed-up velvet pailette insets.
The verdict: Gorgeous, with a lot of rich detail for not a ton of money. (Most of his dresses are $350 to $1,500). It’s no wonder his clothes are as popular with real women as they are on the red carpet.
