N.Y. Fashion Week: Thakoon’s colorful antidote to winter blahs
NEW YORK -- The colorful rose blooms painted on the walls and floors as a backdrop for Thakoon Panichgul’s fall 2014 runway show were a hint that after last season’s detour, the designer was returning to his roots in color and print.
Setting aside the sad soundtrack (Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”), this collection was was an upbeat, color-soaked antidote to the winter blahs, full of cozy, cocooning knits. And Panichgul may just have created one of the coolest new accessories of the season -- a funnel neck dickie-scarf hybrid.
The look: Femme sport.
Key pieces: Embroidered rib knit turtleneck shoulder topper worn with flared hem crepe skirt. Floral embroidered puffer coat. Camel twist hem crewneck sweater worn with blue silk shirt with contrasting scarf tie neck trim, and cropped flannel trousers. Black zip front hooded coat with floral lining.
The verdict: Great, great, great collection. It’s obvious that Panichgul was puzzling over the question of how women can dress in a fun, colorful way in the dead of winter, when more often than not, we’re covered in dark layers. And he came up with lots of good answers -- a pop of print revealed on the lining of a jacket here, or a blouse’s scarf tie dangling over the back of a sweater or coat there. The knit shoulder cozies and riffs on scarves were another genius way of adding a dash of panache, and creating an alternative to the basic scarf and hat. Well done.
