N.Y. Fashion Week: Diane von Furstenberg celebrates wrap dress
NEW YORK -- Diane von Furstenberg, the grande dame of American style, celebrated the 40th anniversary of the wrap dress Sunday afternoon with a runway show at Spring Studios overlooking the dramatic Manhattan cityscape.
For a soundtrack, the band St. Vincent performed live. The starry crowd included Bella Thorne, looking very “American Hustle” in a brown suede wrap dress, AnnaSophia Robb, Olivia Palermo, Coco Rocha and many others.
The first look in the show was a wrap dress, in a gorgeous gold “love knot” jacquard. The gold standard was a theme that ran through the entire collection, including the finale, a parade of gold wrap dresses. After Von Furstenberg did a lap around the runway, taking her trademark walking bow, she hit the stage with her golden bouquet of models behind her, and confetti rained down.
The look: Boho in the city.
The inspiration: Free spirits in dancing skirts and ballerina sweaters, the garment that actually inspired the wrap dress all those years ago. The Ballets Russes.
Key pieces: Black-and-white cloud wave print sweater dress. Gold star burnout black chiffon gown. Poppy-red ballet wrap sweater over rose-heart print crepe dress. Jewel-embellished crepe tunic dress. Multicolored fur cocoon coat. Velvet burnout maxi skirt. Black mesh bootie with red-and-black suede heart details. Fur clutch bags.
The verdict: This event struck just the right note. It wasn’t overly nostalgic, or self-congratulatory, just lovely. She paid homage to the style that made her famous, but didn’t dwell on it too long.
And the rest of the collection looked fantastic, and hit on several trends emerging for the fall season (sweater dressing; fun, novelty coats; and longer-length skirts among them) in a sophisticated yet accessible way.
The whole thing left me with the sense that Von Furstenberg is far from being done. She’s only just beginning.
