Jane Lynch honored as hero at ‘TrevorLive L.A.’ gala
The event: Hosted by Kathy Griffin and bursting with stars, “TrevorLive L.A.” raised funds for the Trevor Project, which provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth.
The event on Dec. 8 at the Hollywood Palladium included a show produced by “So You Think You Can Dance” judge Adam Shankman, and honored “Trevor Hero” Jane Lynch, “Youth Innovator” Adam White and “20/20 Visionary” Toyota. (The latter award was accepted by Chief Executive Mike Groff of Toyota Financial Services.)
The performers: Recording artists Adam Lambert, Sia and Cheyenne Jackson; Megan Hilty of “Smash”; Beth Behrs of “2 Broke Girls”; and “Dancing With the Stars” winner Amber Riley of “Glee” performed. So did an ensemble from “Glee” that included Chris Colfer, Darren Criss, Mark Salling, Naya Rivera, Alex Newell, Melissa Benoist, Becca Tobin, Jenna Ushkowitz, Dot-Marie Jones, Kevin McHale, Blake Jenner, Jacob Artist and Harry Shum Jr.
Yet more stars: There to present awards, introduce performers or simply lend support were Paula Abdul, Ricki Lake, Mandy Moore, Big Sean, Candice Accola, Samantha Ronson, Dermot Mulroney, Lisa Kudrow, NBA star Jason Collins, Jennifer Coolidge of “American Pie“; “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy; “Sex and the City” director Michael Patrick King; Brant Daugherty of “Pretty Little Liars”; Sarah Michelle Gellar (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) and James Wolk of “The Crazy Ones”; Andrew Rannells of “Girls”; Allison Janney of “Masters of Sex;” Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas; Josh Duhamel of “Las Vegas”; Hannah Simone of “New Girl”; Laura Vandervoort of “Bitten”; and Mike C. Manning of the upcoming “Cloud 9.”
The scene: Inside the ballroom, as nearly 1,200 guests caught up over dinner, Abdul showed off snapshots of herself floating in the Dead Sea and meeting with Israel’s President Shimon Peres during a month-long trip to Israel and Australia. She said she celebrated a belated bat mitzvah in Israel. “At age 51,” she added.
Quotes of note: In leading up to Lynch’s award, “Glee” cast members ticked off insults hurled at them by the honoree’s TV persona, Sue Sylvester. First up at the microphone, Colfer named “porcelain,” “gay kid,” “Eddie Munster,” “dough face” and “twinkle tush,” before adding, “Frankly, I’m proud of that last one.”
Accepting her award with characteristic humor, Lynch said, “I‘d love at this moment to be falsely modest and say that I am no hero… I’d love to be able to say what I do is not extraordinary, but I can’t -- I deserve this frigging award.“ She then enumerated all she doesn’t do for the cause, finally calling herself lucky for appearing on “Glee,” which she said portrays “how people are when they have each other’s back and when people are celebrated for who they are.“
The numbers: Tickets ranged from $200 to $2,500. Total proceeds, which also included on-site donations, a silent auction and live auction sales, are yet to be tabulated.
